Dual Xeon X 4. This card is SB Pro compatible and sounds fantastic, very clean and crisp. I tried 3 of these things, a YMF, , and Google [Bot] , m and 8 guests. Each behaved slightly differently with regard to WSS resources and I only managed to get the YMF to behave consistently, but not without a struggle, and even then the mixer settings were so far out of whack that – as always – I yanked the card out and swore to never touch one again.

I believe it has more channels than the real thing, which the Windows MIDI driver can use for full 4-op sound. There was a certain ESS card I tried and didn’t like because it could only play a couple of sounds at a time, or would play the first half of a sound and cut off the rest. These synthesizers were often reasonably faithful to the Yamaha OPL3 chip, which was an important feature for the time as some competing solutions, including Creative’s own CQM synthesis featured in later ISA Sound Blaster compatibles, offered sub-par FM sound quality.

The DOS mixer software turned me off those cards however, and some minor incompatibilities with older games. I wants my Duke3D. Any chance you could give it a go with SoftMPU?
This chip was also used in a few arcade games, notably Atari ‘s Wolf Packand Stern Electronics ‘ Berzerk and Frenzyand in several of Stern ‘s pinball machines. There is also an issue with the game port on this card, detailed in the linked thread above.

The on board amp can be turned off easily via jumpers. At first, even then, all words were encoded by hand by Mozer in his basement, but in the third or fourth year of the license, National came up with a software encoder for it. I bought it new for a Pentium if I remember correctly. Then again Wolf3D does this even on a SB. The 71x can supposedly do that, however the setup program doesn’t know how.
